Morning Agenda: 9am-12:30pm

Teacher and Student Self Assessment:
Evaluate your teaching skills by being honest about your abilities, likes and dislikes. New in 2011: bring a lesson plan you have been using, or want to use, and try it out on the other attendees or simply put it up for discussion. This will start the ball rolling on talking about learning styles and student expectations. We will talk about how to evaluate students; their skills, temperament, goals and their relevant musical background. We will discuss how learning the harp can be physical, mental and social therapy as well.

Developing Practical Ideas for Teaching Today’s Students: We'll cover the pros and cons of individualizing lesson structure to the student or having a "one size fits all" approach. If you're considering teaching in school settings (public, private, charter, church, synagogue etc. ) there are many issues you'll want to know about. Then for some hands-on work with improvisation and accompaniment and how you teach that to your more advanced students.

Quick Break to pick up lunch & return to conference room

Afternoon Agenda: 1-5pm

Fundamental Technique: Good technique is essential no matter what style of music your student wants to play. How you play effects the sound you make. Learn how to put this across to your students.

Playing by ear: . Sharon will cover the merits of learning by ear, especially for traditional music genres. You'll learn essential tips for teaching in this style and what you need to do to develop your own skill at doing this.

Music reading: Robbin will coach you on teaching sight-reading and developing music reading skills for your students who are visual learners. What are the most effective methods?

The Business Side of Teaching & Developing Your Studio: Topics that will be covered include: student contracts, insurance, marketing your studio and getting more students. This is a "how to" discussion on building your studio and we'll garner tips from participants on what works for them in their region.
